Browser support
Why can't I see the chart pedigree?
-
If you can see a button labelled "Layout", move the cursor over it, and
click on the "Combined" item to see the chart as well as text.
(If this item is grey, the text you are viewing doesn't have
a corresponding chart.)
-
Otherwise, if you can see a small link labelled "Full" at the top
of the page, click on it to view the full version of the web pages,
including the chart.
-
If no such button or link is visible, the full version may not be available,
either because it cannot be displayed on your browser, or because you
have JavaScript disabled. (The full version requires
Microsoft Internet Explorer, version 5 or higher for Windows,
Firefox,
Netscape, version 6 or higher,
Opera, version 7 or higher,
or a compatible browser.)
-
If you have the Windows XP (service pack 2) operating system
and are using Microsoft Internet Explorer to look at the pages
on your hard disc or on a CD, the JavaScript may be blocked by default.
To allow the pages to display correctly, right-click on the "information
bar" at the top of the page, and select the "Allow Blocked Content" option.
-
Otherwise, it's possible that an unexpected error has occurred because the
web pages have not been tested on the browser or operating system you are using.
It should still be possible to view the text pages by using the "Text" or "Framed text" links.
Please let me know about any such unexpected errors, if they are not already
listed on the Browser support page.
How can I look at the chart pedigree on its own, without text appearing to the left?
- To look at the chart pedigree on its own, click on the "Chart" item of the "Layout" menu.
The text will remain hidden until the layout is adjusted again, although text can be
displayed in new windows when individuals on the chart are clicked, if the "Show text in new window"
option is selected.
How can I look at the text on its own, without a chart pedigree appearing to the right?
- To look at the text on its own, click on the "Text" item of the "Layout" menu.
The chart will remain hidden until the layout is adjusted again, although charts can be
displayed in new windows when links to individuals in the text are clicked,
if the "Show chart in new window" option is selected.
The web pages aren't displaying correctly on my browser. What should I do?
-
It's possible that an unexpected error has occurred because the
web pages have not been tested on the browser or operating system you are using.
It should still be possible to view the text pages by using the "Text" or "Framed text" links.
Please let me know about any such unexpected errors, if they are not already
listed on the Browser support page.
How can I navigate backwards and forwards through the pages of the site?
-
To move back and forward through the framed pages, use the "<" and ">" buttons
in the top left-hand corner of the web page, rather than the browser's "Back" and "Forward" buttons.
How can I control what is shown in the chart pedigree?
-
The chart pedigree shows selected ancestors and descendants of a base individual,
whose name is shown in bold type within a thick border. Other parts of the chart
can be shown by clicking on the arrows. The chart for a different
base individual can be drawn by clicking on that individual
- which should highlight it in red - and then clicking "Redraw" in the "Format" menu.
-
You can also control the format of the chart in a number of other ways,
using other options in the "Format" menu.
To see instructions, go to the "Topics" section
of the "Help" menu, and click on "Chart pedigree".
Can I bookmark pages (or save them as favourites)?
-
This should be possible if you are using Microsoft Internet Explorer, but not other browsers.
Can I print out the chart pedigree?
-
First hide any text frames using the "Chart" item of the "Layout" menu,
then click on the background of the chart to make sure it is selected.
Choose "Landscape" or "Portrait" mode for printing, depending on the
shape of the chart (in Microsoft Internet Explorer, use the "Page Setup" item of the
browser's "File" menu to do this). When printing, choose the option to print the
"selected frame"
only.
-
Note that if the chart is wider than the paper, the right hand side will not be
printed, and if it is deeper than the paper, it will be printed on more than one sheet.
There may be some minor disruption to the layout because of differences between the way
text is rendered on screen and in print.
(When using Netscape, set the text size to 100% to ensure that the chart prints correctly.)
